In 1997, a mysterious ultra-low-frequency sound was detected in the pitch-black depths of the South Pacific.

The signal was picked up by the U.S. Navy’s SOSUS underwater listening network and detected across nearly 5,000 kilometers of ocean.

Its acoustic power appeared to surpass even that of the mighty blue whale.

Then came an even stranger detail.

The estimated source was near 50° S, 100° W — coordinates eerily associated with R’lyeh, the fictional sunken city from the Cthulhu mythos.

Rumors quickly spread:
Had something enormous awakened in the deep?

But NOAA’s analysis revealed a very different explanation.

It wasn’t a sea monster.
It wasn’t an unknown creature.

The sound was linked to massive ice fracturing near Antarctica — an enormous “icequake” caused by colossal sections of ice breaking apart and collapsing into the ocean.

The resulting acoustic energy traveled thousands of kilometers through the deep-ocean sound channel.

The legendary sound known as “The Bloop” may not have been the voice of a monster.

It was the voice of the planet itself.
